he radio stations of the Illini Radio Group are excited to present the Best of Champaign-Urbana for 2020. This is the second Best Of contest that we have produced as a radio group. As we approached how to make our contest different for 2020, we decided to focus on what is best for Champaign-Urbana area small businesses. The Illini Radio Group has been part of many success stories in east-central Illinois. Our commitment to the success of our clients, community, and our organization is total, continuous, and unvarying. We are not followers, but trendsetters and leaders who create the best customized marketing solutions for our clients.
Our radio group invested over $50,000 in promotion to make sure everyone in the Champaign-Urbana area knew about the contest, and we had a tremendous return on our investment. We had 1,804 individuals and companies competing to be named in the top two spots of 218 categories. Categories included Agriculture, Eat & Drink, Health & Beauty, Home & Garden, Motors, Schools, Services, Shopping, and Things to Do. The radio promotion and social media buzz not only helped get out the vote but also drew attention to our great local businesses!
This year, we enlisted the help of our new friends from NERUS Strategies. They produce best of contests across America, including one of the nation’s largest, Best of Las Vegas. You likely noticed this year that Best of Champaign-Urbana included nominations and then a single round of voting. We also have a new year-round destination website at BestofChampaignUrbana.com, as well as this new book that you are holding! It is the definitive guide to all that is best in Champaign-Urbana.
We started this year’s contest on Aug. 17 with open nominations and received over 3,000 nominations to be on the ballot. As we started voting, we had 1,804 local companies and individuals competing to be voted best. For 2020, we are presenting 335 winners in 218 categories, for a total of 436 awards.
During our voting, Sep. 14 through Oct. 2, we had over 13,300 votes cast. To finish in the top two positions of this year’s contest is not only an accomplishment but also a testament to how the friends, fans, and customers feel about our local businesses.
The great pandemic of 2020 has been a challenge for everyone. Here at home, as a community, we have been finding new ways to conduct business, to be supportive to employers and employees, and to be responsible in our response to the health crisis. Especially in such a difficult year, we could not be prouder to salute and pay tribute to the great businesses that were voted the Best. Thank you to all the folks that took the time to vote.
We encourage you to explore BestofChampaignUrbana.com and to engage with our winners. Some may be familiar, and some may be new to you. All will welcome your business as we continue to get back at it.
Congratulations to all, and until our 2021 contest… we will see you on the radio!
